Estate planning involves the structure, control, preservation, and transfer of one’s assets and legal interests. Every person needs some level of estate planning, from a simple will and powers of attorney to sophisticated tax planning strategies. The estate planning process always begins with a discussion of the client’s goals. My role as an estate planning attorney is to understand the client’s goals, to suggest strategies to achieve them, and to work with the client to structure an estate plan that will achieve their goals in the most efficient, economical, timely and tax-sensitive ways possible. A typical estate plan includes documents such as a last will and testament, financial power of attorney, health care power of attorney, living will declaration, and one or more types of trusts.
